Overseas Aid stalwart made MBE

Dennis Troy, who will be 71 next week, is honoured for services to communities in Africa, South America and Jersey. Mr Troy has been on 12 Jersey Overseas Aid Committee projects, most as a team leader or technical leader. Most were in Africa building hospitals, medical centres, schools and community halls. Mr Troy, who lives in St Martin with his wife Roseleen, said: ‘I am surprised and delighted to receive an award. I have always seen it as part of my duty and my faith to give of my time to those in need.’ He becomes the second MBE in the family. His daughter Angela is married to solicitor Philip Syvret, whose father Ken, a former States Deputy, is also an MBE. Mr Troy did not go on his first overseas aid trip until he was 47. ‘I thought I was too old but I was desperate to go. I applied and ended up being appointed team leader,’ he said. That first trip was to Uganda and he has returned to that country many times since. He established a trust to raise funds for a community in the country. He runs popcorn and candy floss stalls at local fetes and events throughout the year to raise funds for the trust. As well as his overseas aid work, he supports the local Tools for Self Reliance group to help refurbish building tools and other equipment to be sent to African communities.
