Virus warning after puppy from UK dies

A second puppy from the same litter, bought by another resident, suffered similar symptoms but has now fully recovered. Test results on that case have not yet confirmed whether it had contracted parvovirus. Canine parvovirus can be lethal in puppies as well as in adult dogs which are not vaccinated. Although there has not been a local breakout of the disease for 20 years, one local vet has seen two previous cases in puppies brought over from the UK. Vet Ian Cox, from the New Era Veterinary Hospital, who treated the puppy that died, has warned owners of puppies and dogs to be on the lookout for the main symptom of parvovirus – severe, blood-stained diarrhoea. The dog which died also had the bacterial infection of the gut – campylobacter.
