The milestone figure was reached in the last week of May but has since fallen back slightly. Today there are 191 inmates. The prison was originally built for 120 inmates and, despite new wings being added, it is overcrowded. Prison governor Steve Guy-Gibbens said that it was impossible to put a maximum figure on capacity because prisoners in different units had to be moved around as the make-up of the prison population fluctuated.
