£ 1/2bn court case gets go-ahead

The case, involving the former mayor of Sao Paulo and almost half a billion pounds of allegedly stolen money, will be heard in the Royal Court. The final obstacle to the start of proceedings was cleared last week when the Privy Council, the highest court in the British legal system, decided that federal investigators in Brazil should be granted access to all of the accounts held in Jersey with Citibank and Deutsche Bank International. A major international investigation is under way into the dealings of Paulo Maluf, who is accused of stealing almost half a billion pounds from the Brazilian city’s accounts while he was governor between 1979 and 1983 and mayor between 1993 and 1996. He is accused of siphoning money from building projects and using accounts in New York, Switzerland and Jersey to hide it.
