Arts venue ‘may have to close’

Steve Haigh has called for decisions about the concert and theatre venue to be made soon. The former church was turned into an arts venue in the 1990s after a multi-million-pound refurbishment but needs more investment. ‘We still need to press for the States to make a decision on St James, regarding its long-term future,’ said Mr Haigh. ‘Without significant capital funding to address much-needed improvements to its facilities and to address ongoing maintenance liabilities, the future of this venue remains in doubt.’ The association’s new chairman, John Young, agrees that the venue has a lot to offer the Island and he is keen to avoid the threat of closure. ‘The issues of St James’s future are still to be resolved, but at the moment the position is stable,’ he said. ‘If St James is lost to the association it will be a great loss to the arts.’
