Jersey in the frame to host World League

The ICC’s development committee will make their decision at their next meeting in Dubai in early May.

Jersey are in the running along with Singapore and Nepal.

ICC Global development manager Matthew Kennedy, who has been in the Island this week on an ICC Inspection visit along with ICC chief executive committee member Laurie Pieters, said: ‘There is certainly a serious chance that Jersey could host the Division V tournament next year.

‘In essence we are probably down to two potential hosts and that will be another decision taken by the development committee in Dubai in May.

‘There are eight teams competing in the tournament, seven of those are already confirmed, and we’d like to host it in one of the countries that are competing and ideally where the majority are on tour.

‘So that puts Jersey in a very strong position.

The other types of countries are Singapore and perhaps even Nepal.

The discussion of the development committee I’m sure will centre around Jersey and Singapore and both have submitted tentative budgets and tentative plans and a decision will be taken in a few weeks’ time.

‘Looking at the World Cricket League in Europe, I see no reason why Jersey could not host a team right the way up to Division I if they reached that far.

‘The facilities here are akin to some of those leading associate European countries like the Netherlands, Scotland and Ireland.

Yes, they have more grounds, but their feature grounds are very similar to those in Jersey.’ Countries taking part in the Division V tournament along with Jersey are, Afghanistan, USA, Botswana, Norway, Singapore, Nepal and an as yet undecided east Asia-Pacific country.
