J United march into regional play-offs

Under the guidance of coach Debbie Pitman, J United won back-to-back games in Bournemouth on Sunday to top their group with a 100 per cent record from five games in their first season in the competition.

Pitman said: ‘This is a new competition for all of us and the girls are having a great season.

They were both brilliant performances last weekend, yes they are doing really well.

‘The team is improving all the time, they get on well together and the spirit they have together is great for the team’s bonding.

‘We are now in the play-offs and to progress to the National semi-finals in May we have to win the play-offs.

‘It’s going to be very tough because just one team will go through and we will be giving our best to be that team.’ Eight teams will compete in the South-West Region play-offs, J United and two others from the South and five from the North, with the overall winner moving on to the National semi-finals in May.

In Bournemouth, J United defeated Dorset West 56-5 with goal-shooter Emma Carré being awarded player of the match, setting them up nicely for their much tougher match against top-of-the-table Keltic Academy.

Carré and goal-attack Kathryn Miller were also invincible in the shooting circle converting on average over one goal a minute.

The shooters were staunchly supported throughout by the fast and accurate attacking play of Harriet Simon and Jenna Murphy at wing-attack and Jacy Brown.

Centre Brown was deservedly named player of the match in a 48-23 win against Keltic Academy.

The South-West Regional play-offs are in Bath on 28 and 29 April.

J United: Emma Carré, Kathryn Miller, Harriett Simon, Jacy Brown, Bethan Conroy (captain), Josie Le Masurier, Kirsten McArthur, Jenna Murphy and Nicole Goddard.

Officials were Debbie Pitman (coach), Aileen Binnie (umpire) and Pat Brown (scorer).
