New licences within a week

The licences were approved by the States yesterday and Islanders will be able to apply for them from 4 April. They will last ten years instead of the current five. Transport Minister Guy de Faye said that the new EU compliant cards would put an end to the days of foreign police staring in bewilderment at tattered bits of pink cardboard and asking: ‘What kind of driving licence is this?’. The introduction of the new licences also follows concerns that the old-style cardboard licences were easy to forge. ‘These now conform with the EU standard and this should stop any confusion that the old licences used to cause when Jersey residents drove their cars abroad,’ Deputy de Faye said. ‘The other factor is they will be incredibly hard wearing which is why we are able to issue them for ten years instead of five.’
