Teenage drugs mother jailed

Her co-accused, a 22-year-old man, was given a jail term of two and a half years after the court heard that he had named other drug importers and given information that assisted in a major drugs inquiry which led to arrests. The pair, Janeth Gomes Rodrigues and Mario Martinho Dias de Figueiredo, were arrested at the Elizabeth Teriminal on 17 October having arrived on the Condor fast ferry from St Malo. At the time Rodrigues was five months pregnant. The drugs were concealed inside a nodding dog toy found on the rear parcel shelf of the red Peugeot they were travelling in. The court was told by Crown Advocate Sally Sharpe that they had travelled to Portugal to buy the 26.88 grams of heroin and half a gram of cocaine, together valued at between £5,000 and £8,000. The Crown moved for a five-year sentence against Rodrigues, but this was reduced by the Superior Number to three and a half years after hearing mitigation on her behalf from Advocate Pierre Landick.
