Five up for Sports Council’s Sid Guy award

Awarded annually for long service and dedication to sport there are representatives from swimming, football, canoeing, motor sport and the equestrian ranks.

The winner will be announced at the Council’s Highland Spring awards event at the Ambassadeur Hotel on 23 March.

Also to be revealed on the night will be the Council’s choice for Sports Person of the Year and Team of the Year.

A new award, the Colin Welsh Memorial, for the unsung sports hero, will also be presented, as will the Highland Spring Sporting Bursaries.

The nominations for the Sid Guy Award are as follows: Kevin Mansel, a founder member of the Jersey Canoe Club and a paddler since the early 1970s; Tess Phillips who has dedicated her life to developing Island horses and riders; Peter Bonny a former president of the Jersey Kart and Motor Club; Charlie Gravett, a dedicated supporter of long distance swimming, both around Jersey and further afield; and Bernie Perrier, who has a long service record in local football, and Magpies FC in particular, that stretches back to just after the Second World War.

Those nominated for the Colin Welsh Memorial are: Lawrence Thérin, the groundsman for the Carrefour Pétanque Club; Dave Crocker a helper with Pisces Amateur Boxing Club; John Amy for his support of the Mont à l’abbé Gym Club; Jack Pallot for his work with the Western Miniature Rifle Club; Peter Bonny, also nomined for the Sid Guy Award; Stuart McGlinchey for his efforts on behalf of the Jersey Surf Kyak Club; Margaret Le Sueur for her work in the bowls world, at Sun BC, Bowls Jersey and the Jersey Indoor Bowling Association; Basil Chall for 25 years of work for the Jersey Horse Driving Society; and Carole Penfold for her behind the scenes work in the world of swimming.
