By the end of this month, specially-designed cells which ‘virtually eliminate’ points from which prisoners can hang themselves should be housing some of the most vulnerable inmates. Such so-called ‘safer cells’ are a common feature of larger UK police stations and prisons. This week, Home Affairs Minister Wendy Kinnard was questioned about improvements at La Moye in the wake of two suicides in less than five months. In September, Neil Anthony Davey was found hanging in his cell shortly after arriving at the prison. In January Paul Jonathan Romeril was found hanging in his cell in the days before he was due to be sentenced for sexual offences against children.
