Trevor Gallichan had to lay down his tools on 23 December and attempts to find an alternative site have not yet proved successful. Meanwhile, the St John site is being offered for sale to only three parties. They are the leaseholder and Mr Gallichan’s partner, Tony Benest, and site neighbours Jersey Telecom chairman John Henwood and lawyer Mike Lombardi. The four-week tender period ended at the weekend. ‘I have worked there since I was 16 and started as an apprentice for Mr Benest. I am now his partner,’ said Mr Gallichan. And Mr Gallichan said he would have considered buying the site if he had had more time to raise money and assess the viability of selling his own home to build a new one at the Mont Mado quarry.
