Fishing dispute goes to Privy Council

The Judicial Committee of the Privy Council in Downing Street heard that the five sitting Law Lords, headed by Lord Scott, had the power to send the matter there. EU community law issues and possible inconsistencies have been mooted, but it is understood that neither party wants the long-running dispute to go down that path as it could take years to resolve. A Jersey delegation including Jersey Fishermen’s Association chairman Mike Taylor and fishermen brothers Andrew and John de la Haye went to Downing Street yesterday for the hearing. ‘We are here to see what happens and know where we all stand. Once we know where we stand, we can get on with trying to make our living work, which is our primary objective,’ said John de la Haye, who has been fishing with his brother for 18 years. ‘The issue needs to be sorted out, not only for us but for the younger generation if they want a future in the fishing industry.’
