Housing: ‘No tenants will be forced to move’

Fears that tenants will be forced out by the proposals, he says, are wide of the mark. And representatives of tenants’ associations have backed the proposals to sell properties to fund a wide refurbishment programme, saying that tenants have nothing to be scared of. Earlier this month the Housing department published the Social Housing Property Plan 2007-2016, which calls for a sell-off of up to 800 properties over ten years to help renovate and refurbish public sector housing. Most of the homes would be sold on a shared equity basis, with Housing holding up to 25% of the value until the properties change ownership, and the money would be used to improve the 18% of States homes that do not meet UK standards. Senator Le Main said that there would be no evictions, and no one would be forced out of States accommodation under the proposals, which will be debated by the States on 13 March. ‘No one will have to move,’ he said. ‘We are seeking expressions of interest from tenants who would like to buy their own homes. Those who come forward will be given an opportunity. We are not going to evict anyone.’
