She was alerted to the scene by a strange noise coming from the hallway of her St Lawrence home at around 5.30 pm on Friday. Fortunately the door to the room was closed and the fire was contained while she called the Fire Service. Two firefighters in breathing apparatus extinguished the blaze, and although the fire was small, the bedroom suffered a large amount of smoke damage. Station manager Trevor Frain said: ‘Thanks to the correct actions of the elderly lady in leaving the door of the bedroom closed when she discovered the fire, further damage to the premises was prevented. We would remind people that ensuring doors are closed will greatly assist in containing a fire to the room of origin and a smoke alarm should always be fitted to give early warning of a fire.’ If anyone is concerned about fire safety in their home, the Fire Service offer a free safety check – phone 633567.
