Trigg’s men push Scottish hard

Jon Trigg’s hard-working and organised side gave the Scots a good game and a bit of luck and they may well have taken the match to extra time.

A goal in each half, from Ross Crick and late on from Dave Brodie, secured a 2-0 Scottish victory and their manager, Bob Kearsey, complimented his opponents.

Kearsey said: ‘It was a really good game, both sides had good opportunities and had it finished 1-1 at 90 minutes I would have had no complaints.

‘St Peter pressed us hard after half time; we looked dangerous on the break and we were able to breathe easily after Dave produced a good finish from outside the penalty area.

‘Ross finished well, too, from just outside the area.

The goal came out of nothing as Scott Devlin knocked a ball forward.

‘We’ve had a bad start to the season; we are playing catch-up with our fitness because half of the squad have not trained because of the rest of the squad being involved with Jersey and the Combination teams’ squads.

‘St Peter gave us a hard game and I’m sure they will finish in the top four this season.’ St Peter boss Jon Trigg said: ‘This result and performance proves we can compete with the best.

We’re improving all the time but we must learn to take our chances.

‘When opportunities come along we have to take them.

Twice we had efforts cleared off the line and that in the end proved crucial.’ Chris Andrews hit St Peter’s woodwork early on while St Peter pressed hard after the break with substitute Dominic Maher at the heart of the majority of their play.

Saints goalkeeper Gareth Bayley made a couple of excellent saves while his opposite number Aaron Gouveia wobbled a few times on crosses into his penalty area.
