Bowls:Mixed fortunes for Jersey team in Portugal

JERSEY have finished eighth overall in the the European Bowls Union Team Championships played at Vilamoura, Portugal, as it came to an end at the weekend.

However, the pairings of David Le Marquand with Gaynor Thomas, and Lee Nixon with Chris Grimes, were first overall in the mixed pairs competition.Although Nixon and Grimes only finished third in their group (sixth overall), having beaten Wales one and a half to a half in their last game, Le Marquand and Thomas topped their group comfortably with 40 points after a final 2-0 win against the Canary Islands.With the two teams' scores added together, Jersey recorded 72 points, the same as England.

However, on countback they had a shot difference of +128 to England's +97 and were therefore clear winners in the mixed pairings' category.Meanwhile, the ladies' singles competition came to a close on Friday with a 1-1 draw for Thomas against the Canary Islands and a one and a half to half defeat for Chris Grimes against a European Select player.Despite these scores both players were able to hold on to their overall positions within their individual groups with Thomas finishing fifth in section T and tenth overall, and Grimes seventh in section C and 13th overall out of a total of 28 players.In the men's competition a one and a half to half set win for David Le Marquand secured him tenth place in section T and gave him an overall position of 18th out of 28.Lee Nixon, having played all of his games by Thursday, saw his closest opponent from the Netherlands take four points from his last game.

This left Nixon in 11th place in group C and in 21st place overall.
