Retirement flats plan is ‘too big’

The Planning sub-committee were due to consider proposals from developer Dandara seeking permission for the huge site to be redeveloped as a retirement complex today. The latest plans are for 106 one- and two- bedroom apartments, 35 cottages, 18 other apartments, a 40 bed nursing home and a 30 bed residential home. But the residents group contend that the main building, which it is proposed will house the 106 one and two bedroom apartments, is far too large and will have an enormous environmental impact on the Beaumont area.Resident group spokesman Bob Taylor said the main blocks will be three stories high with a pitched roof.

‘We have measured the footprint of the blocks and they will be bigger than Century Buildings on the Esplanade, nearly 50 per wider and almost as deep.’ He added that the proposed building will be visible ‘from all points in St Aubin’s Bay’.
