Jersey duo do well at Horse of Year show

Rachelle Bownes and her pony Ovington Hermes finished in fourth place in the Championship Harness Pony of the Year event on Sunday.Speaking from the NEC last night, a former winner of the event, Nicola Blandin, who accompanied Bownes to the show, said that Hermes had behaved and performed very well.’Rachelle is absolutely thrilled with the result.

This was the first time she and her pony had qualified.

The atmosphere was fantastic and the whole event was great fun.’Bownes went in to the arena around 4 pm, then had to wait till after 8 pm for the final results.Lorraine Allan and her horse Nouveau were finalists in the Search for a Star working hunter event and placed sixth.Speaking from the ferry this morning, Allan said: ‘He had very good ride and jumping marks, but he lost marks on the confirmation side (where the judges award marks were placed for the build and looks of the horse).

He had a clear round in the jumping and gave the judge a lovely ride.

The atmosphere was fantastic, the arena was packed and Nouveau coped very well until they applauded! But it was his first experience of performing in front of a huge crowd and apart from that he was perfectly behaved.’She said that she hopes to qualify again next year.’I competed with my older horse a couple of years ago, and now I’ve been with my middle one.

I have a younger horse coming through so I hope to qualify with him next time.’
