Workers ‘better off than last year’

Policy and Resources vice-president Senator Terry Le Sueur said that this was good news in the fight against inflation.

The Average Earnings Index shows that the average weekly earnings in Jersey increased by 4.7 per cent in the 12 months up until June, while inflation only rose by 4.2 per cent in the same period. But the year-on-year increases in wages are slowing, according to the report.

Without taking into account the two-year cycle of public sector pay increases, the figures show a steady fall in pay rises since 2000.’The trend is coming downwards,’ said Senator Le Sueur.

‘I would say that it looks encouraging, but we must not become complacent.’
