Power: Island to lose La Collette?

Around 98 per cent of our electricity currently comes via the existing two interconnectors to France, with La Collette providing power in the winter months when demand is at its highest. The Jersey Electricity Company maintain La Collette at a cost of several million pounds per year to provide a secure electricity supply in case the links to France fail.

But managing director Mike Liston said that while La Collette – and the 40 people who work there – was safe for now, the impact of the Jersey Competition Regulatory Authority (JCRA) taking over as regulator of electricity supply in two years, and the future prices and security of the privatised European grid, could lead to the balance being tipped in favour of a third interconnector to a new location in France.
