Bid to raise the level of interest in Jersey notes

A campaign is due to be launched next month by the Finance and Economics Committee and the Treasury to highlight the fact that the Island generates revenue by using its own currency. Each year, around £2 million in interest is generated by the circulation of Jersey currency, and the aim of the campaign will be to increase that amount for use in supporting public services.Around £50 million in local currency is in circulation at present – a sum which varies throughout the year.Finance president Senator Terry Le Sueur said his committee were looking at constructive ways of generating revenue for the Island without affecting residents.

And the use of more Jersey notes was a painless way for them to bring this about.’We want everyone to use Jersey notes because the Island gets the benefit of the interest of the money in circulation which can be used to support public services,’ he said.
