Mr Shenton had to stand on a chair and speak through a megaphone to address the crowd, who turned up to hear his views on the deal to give Les Pas Holdings a prime £10m waterfront site for dropping its claim to ownership of the St Helier foreshore. The meeting was scheduled to take place inside the Town Hall but so many people turned up it was decided to move it outside into the street.

The St Helier honorary police closed roads and tourists looked on bemused by the unexpected political gathering.Mr Shenton said that he was intent on sending a petition to the Queen to request that she order a Committee of Inquiry to investigate the background of the negotiations between Crown Officers and Les Pas Holdings regarding ownership of the foreshore. He asked people to support his petition and 300 forms were passed out to eager supporters.

He was cheered loudly throughout the meeting and at times his voice quaked with emotion as he spoke.
