Champions of 2000 and 2001 St Peter, who moved towards their fourth consecutive Charity final, won 2-1 at home against Rozel.Goals by the club’s leading scorer Gary Freeman and a tremendous 18-yard angled drive into a top corner from Martin Cassidy secured them a second-round tie against fellow Division I outfit Jersey Wanderers.
Rozel, who are back in the top flight after winning promotion last season, fully deserved their consolation, which was netted by substitute Scott Healey who rounded the goalkeeper to score shortly after hitting the post with his first touch of the game.St Peter manager Steve Coutanche said: ‘We got through but we didn’t play that well.
‘Rozel ought to be delighted with their performance.
They created more chances than us and they were disappointed not to have won.’They gave a good account of themselves and I don’t think they will be an easy team to beat this season as many people may be thinking.’Rozel assistant Kevin Ganley said: ‘On another day we could have won.
We couldn’t put the ball in the net from some very good chances.
We’re a young side and things are shaping up well.’Meanwhile, St Brelade scored five times in the second half to overturn a 3-1 deficit and defeat Beeches Old Boys 6-4 at home.Victorious manager Peter Taylor said: ‘It was a good cup-tie and we eventually killed the game off with two goals in the last 15 minutes.
‘We’ve had a lot of pre-season friendlies and on the night our fitness helped us home in the end.’Martin James scored a hat-trick for Beeches and Mark De Abreu a single.
