Senator hits out at ‘intimidation’

The Senator has reacted angrily to Mr Bailhache’s writing to all States Members to say the Senator should not criticise the legal advice of the Solicitor General Stephanie Nicolle given in connection with the Les Pas Holdings case.In an e-mail responding to Mr Bailhache and copied to all States Members, Senator Syvret said: ‘Fortunately the days when Jersey’s Crown Officers could intimidate and silence their elected representatives are over, although you obviously have some significant difficulty in coming to terms with that.’This is the 21st century.

The age of Victorian paternalism and unquestioning deference is over.

I suggest you finally wake up to that fact.’The Attorney General’s comments were in response to an e-mail sent last week by the Senator suggesting that a key debate in the Les Pas case could be held ‘in committee’ to allow more opportunity for questions to be asked about the legal issues.
