A total of 408 trees have been surveyed so far in private gardens, public parks and various areas of land containing trees, and the rarities include 21 British ‘champions’ – the tallest in a species.Dr Owen Johnson, the expert leading the data collection, visited the Island recently – and he was not disappointed.Arboriculturalist Conrad Evans said that because of the Island’s almost tropical microclimate and the keenness of gardeners, there was an abundance of unusual plants to record.
