New doubt over need for a police authority

A Home Affairs paper has been lodged outlining the difficulties in setting up such an authority.

The committee are seeking the views of States Members on a way forward.Among the problems is the difficulty of finding someone suitable who is willing to chair the authority.

After former Deputy Robin Rumboll resigned from the post because of ill-health, Senator Christopher Lakeman became temporary chairman on a caretaker basis but had to relinquish it early in 2002 on his appointment as president of the Privileges and Procedures Committee.A different candidate was found, but he came to the conclusion that a police authority was not appropriate for Jersey. The paper lodged this week sets out three options to be considered.

These include carrying on towards setting up the authority at a cost of around £100,000, setting up a consultative group under the present political structure – a way forward the committee believe has merits, or rescinding the States resolution.
