CI companies reminded of copyright regulations

The Newspaper Licensing Agency has been contacting Channel Islands companies to make them aware of legislation regarding copyright and newspaper material.

any national titles use the NLA to police proper use of their material and the agency has turned its attention to the Channel Islands to help to prevent unauthorised use of locally printed material.

simple licensing system with the NLA means that use can be made of newspaper copy without infringing copyright law.

any organisations in the Channel Islands routinely copy and distribute articles from the Jersey Evening Post and its sister paper, the Guernsey Press, around their offices, and outside the islands when, technically, they should not do so.

ow the Guiton Group publishing division titles have joined others in the UK using the services of the NLA to prevent unauthorised copying.

he NLA is asking local organisations to pay for an annual licence that gives permission to copy and distribute articles to which the JEP or Guernsey Press hold the copyright.

he procedure has become standard for business in the UK.

Marks and Spencer took out a standard licence after a UK civil court case went to the Court of Appeal.

And other high-profile names which have paid NLA for unlicensed copying include the Labour Party, Commerzbank AG and the British United Provident Association (BUPA).

EP editor Chris Bright said that copyright fees would generally continue to be waived for charities and non-profit organisations seeking permission to copy JEP material.

o inquire about permission to copy cuttings for internal management and information purposes, contact the NLA, Wellington Gate, 7 and 9 Church Road, Tunbridge Wells, TN1 1NL, telephone 01892 525273, e-mail copy@nla.
