£3.7m assets seized in drugs money case

Everything they owned was confiscated – from cash, Eurobonds, houses and a pub to the fixtures and fittings of drug trafficking butcher Michael O’Brien’s former St Brelade home. The court accepted that the five had benefited from drug smuggling to the tune of almost £11.2 million between 1996 and 1998.

It retains the power to continue recovering assets up to that figure should the defendants come into money in the future. The Royal Court heard that O’Brien (56), who now lives in Saltash, Cornwall, accrued a fortune of £3,752,248 from drug dealing.

He had hidden vast amounts of heroin, cannabis, speed and ecstasy in meat consignments shipped from England and delivered to his Columbus Street butchery business.
