Brought to light: Images of the past

The plates were found by painter and decorator Ron Ahier in a box which he came across as he cleared a washhouse in St Mark’s Road in 1958 and which the lady of the house gave to him as a toolbox.Mr Ahier took out the plates and forgot about them.

But recently he came across them again, and he and his wife Yvette, who ran La Fontaine guesthouse in David Place for 23 years until 1988, decided to have prints made.’I have no idea who took them but they are fascinating.

There are 50 plates and, judging by the way people are dressed, I think they were taken in the early 1900s.

What is interesting is that there isn’t a single car.’Mr Ahier’s dating is supported by the poster on the wall of the Cenotaph in Broad Street advertising a Cordiale Entente fete in the grounds of Victoria College on 23 August 1906.
