Tourism faces up to new challenge

Hoteliers and tour operators describe bookings so far as ‘patchy’.

Last-minute bookings are growing rapidly and even though the Island now has only 14,500 beds – including campsites and self-catering – there is still space for this month and next.An increase in overall air and sea carryings of one per cent is also attributed to residents travelling more as a result of lower fares and price competition.Tourism Board chairman Deputy Lyndon Farnham described the season as ‘challenging’.

‘There is optimism for the future but we knew it was going to be a difficult season,’ he said.
