Smoking ban: First signs of a backlash

Senator Paul Le Claire, himself a smoker and a member of the Health Committee that commissioned the Tobacco Strategy, announced today that he would be tabling amendments which would limit smoking in bars rather than banning it.His suggestions aimed at placating the smoking lobby may not, however, go far enough.

The former president of the Jersey Licensed Victuallers Association and landlord of La Folie, Chris Melville, said that even a partial ban was ‘a complete nonsense’.’If people cannot come to the pub and have a quiet drink and a smoke they will stay at home and smoke in front of the children.

It is the lesser of two evils,’ he said.
