The president of Policy and Resources today described Simon Crowcroft’s proposition as ‘ill-conceived, ill thought-out and very unfortunate’.Even his fellow Constables – whose parishes would stand to gain financially – are uneasy about the plan and are annoyed that he did not consult them before lodging it.Under Mr Crowcroft’s proposal, the States would pay for all welfare and residential care from next year – a move which would cost the taxpayer £7 million.

But under the proposals put forward by the parish/States steering group, the parishes would, in return, take on responsibility for the upkeep of roads and other services.
