Man who fled to Spain found guilty of attack

It took an Assize jury nearly five hours yesterday afternoon to find Richard Harrison (32) guilty of a grave and criminal assault on Daniel Devenny outside Stampers, St Aubin, on Easter Sunday, 4 April 1999.Harrison’s trial had been delayed for more than three years because after being charged with the offence he fled to Spain to hide.

When he was arrested abroad, he contested extradition and was not returned to Jersey until February this year.Delivering the jury’s verdict shortly before 6 pm, the foreman revealed that the 12 were not unanimous.

The jury had already been back into court after two and a half hours to ask more questions, but were finally able to reach a majority decision of ten to two to find him guilty.Harrison was remanded in custody until Friday 18 July when a date will be fixed for sentencing.
