Couple watch as home of 40 years is demolished

Engineers decided that it was too dangerous to leave Lawrence and Trixie Moulin’s Old St John’s Road home of more than 40 years standing. The couple are now living in a property across the road while their house is rebuilt.Mr and Mrs Moulin, who have been married fore 54 years, say the trauma started shortly after work began to convert the former Alexandra Hotel into 37 two and three bedroom homes in the spring of last year.Mr Moulin recalled how their house shook as piles were being driven in by contractors Columbia on the plot next door.As a former builder, he said that he had told the builders that the vibrations would cause serious damage to his house, but nothing was done until it was too late.’My wife went into hospital for a routine operation and she should have been home again after seven or eight days, but she was in hospital for five weeks,’ said Mr Moulin.’The doctors said that the stress had complicated matters and made her ill.’He said he had also been badly affected by the ordeal, but was trying to put a brave face on the situation. The couple had hoped that the remedial work would be completed earlier this year while they were touring Europe in their motorhome.

However, they are still far from being able to return home.A spokesman for Colombia said that the matter was in the hands of the company’s insurers and he could not comment further.
