This proposal has been made by the Constable of St Helier, Simon Crowcroft, who says that States Members should not escape any of the pain which would be suffered by the rest of the public sector in achieving significant savings in the cost of the government’s wage bill.In an amendment he is lodging, to the proposals he submitted last month designed to secure overall savings of at least ten per cent, he is now advocating that the number of States Members either be reduced from the current level of 53 or their allowances be cut to achieve the savings.’I believe the States Assembly should play its part in reducing the cost of government to the taxpayer.
If approved, my amendment will require the Policy and Resources Committee to consult with Privileges and Procedures and Members themselves over the best way to achieve the savings.’That could be through either a reduction in the number of Members or through adjustments to remuneration levels,’ said the Constable
