Chief supt Lennie Harper was the only interviewee for the job held by deputy chief Roly Jones, who retires in August. In spite of the lack of competition, a spokes-woman insisted that the selection process had been tough.

The interview panel had included members of the Appointments Commission and HM inspector Sir Ronnie Flannigan.’I am delighted,’ said Mr Harper.

‘It was a very rigorous selection process.

I know, because I went through it yesterday morning.’He said that he hoped to continue modernising the force and to build on the legacy left by Mr Jones.

But he declined to comment on any changes that he might like to make.

‘I think that it is always good policy to look around and get to know the job before making changes,’ he said.
