Highlands helps adults to make good progress

The prospectus, which offers a wide range of courses covering shiatsu massage, languages, navigation and even writing for the media, is distributed with today’s JEP.

The programme of adult education classes has been central to the Education, Sport and Culture Committee’s lifelong learning strategy as it opens a range of learning opportunities to the community.Highlands principal Dr Ed Sallis said that about a quarter of the courses on offer this year were new, and that he hoped people who had done courses in the past would take the chance to progress their learning.’One of the things we are trying to do is help adults improve through progression,’ he said.’People are moving towards doing art degree courses having started with the foundation programme, and people who have done the office skills programmes are transferring on to the mainstream business courses in the college.’The prospectus also includes a set of courses run by the crew of Grease at the Jersey Opera House.

The courses, which take place in August, focus on music, choreography and dance, set and sound design and lighting.’The Adult and Community Education Autumn Prospectus is the cornerstone of the Lifelong Learning Strategy, and there are 3,500 people who will be taking courses at Highlands over the next year,’ said Dr Sallis.’A lot of those people will be taking their first step in terms of adult education.

We do English for speakers of other languages and reading and writing courses that are very much basic education, but for other people there will be some quite advanced classes.’
