What the papers say – April 12

As Britain edges closer to joint action with the US over chemical weapons in Syria, the crisis leads most papers on Thursday.

Tensions between the West and Russia ratcheted up on Wednesday after Donald Trump tweeted that strikes with “nice and new and ‘smart!’” missiles were coming.

The Times says Theresa May has recalled her Cabinet to seek approval for joining the US military action, which suggests she will defy calls led by Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn to consult Parliament.

The Daily Mail says choosing to back the US without seeking MPs’ consent is “May’s great gamble”.

The PM has already ordered some of the Navy’s submarines to move within missile range of Syria, the Daily Telegraph reports.

The Guardian warns the standoff has spiralled into the most dangerous confrontation between the nuclear-armed powers since the height of the Cold War.

“On Brink” reads the Daily Mirror’s front page, while the Daily Express asks if the crisis is “one tweet from war”.

The i and the Metro also lead with Mr Trump’s Twitter threat.

Alongside a report on Syria, the Financial Times leads with Tesco’s £1 billion comeback from crisis three years ago after the grocer posted a sharp rise in profits.

The Sun carries a report on ITV’s Full Monty: Ladies Night programme.
