Teacher’s invite to royal wedding ‘perfect’ way to spend own anniversary

An inspiring primary school teacher invited to the royal wedding will be celebrating his own first wedding anniversary the same weekend.

David Gregory, 28, from Blyth, Northumberland, is taking wife Hannah to enjoy the festivities in the grounds of Windsor Castle on May 19.

The pair married on May 20 last year and Mr Gregory described the invitation as the “perfect” way to mark their own milestone.

He will be wearing his own wedding suit for the occasion, but joked that his 26-year-old wife is stopping short of turning up in her wedding gown.

“We’d always planned on celebrating our one-year anniversary as you’d expect, but I don’t think it could have been any more perfect,” he said.

“I’m planning on going in very formal attire. I felt very comfortable and happy in my wedding suit so I think that’s the right way to go.

“Obviously we thought about Hannah wearing her wedding dress as well but we’re not going to try and steal any limelight.”

Mr Gregory, who was put forward for an invite by the Lord Lieutenant of Northumberland, the Duchess of Northumberland, was singled out for his work strengthening and celebrating his local community in Blyth.

His recycling initiative with pupils won a Love Northumberland award, and he is a driving force behind the Port of Blyth’s STEM hub, designed to encourage pupils’ engagement with STEM subjects, and inspire their future careers.

The youngsters in his school have yet to find out about his invite because they are on their half-term holidays.

“I can’t wait to tell them. We’re looking at how we can make this really relevant and real to the children,” Mr Gregory said.

He is planning to record a video diary of his experience on the day for the pupils.
