Welcome to the weekly update of the Ashburton Jersey School’s Investment Challenge
It may have escaped your attention, but there was one substantial milestone reached in the markets this week – the UK’s FTSE 100 index reached a new all-time high, trading above 8,000 on Thursday morning, up over 7% year to date.
In general, the equity markets have traded sideways this past week as they grapple with the prospect of higher interest rates to combat inflation and a more resilient job and consumer spending environment.
The teams have seen relatively good performances, with those holding Tesla and Avacta shares continuing to perform well. Victoria College’s ‘BSG Investments’ has a holding in it and now also leads the pack with an impressive 30.65% rise in the value of its portfolio. Their portfolio consists of mostly tech-related equities, which have all performed very well. Jersey College for Girls retains second place ‘The Wharf of Wall Street’ from Victoria College has now slipped back to 4th place with Beaulieu’s ‘The 5 Musketeers’ now up one place to 3rd.
There is a change at the top of the school rankings with Highlands College now leading with an impressive average return of 16.81%. The persistent performance across all three teams means it now leapfrogs Jersey College for Girls, which has slipped into third position.
