TSG launches Island’s first tech-themed podcast series

Each #TimeSavingGurus – Technology Unplugged podcast focuses on a national or international day, delving into the history behind the theme and then examining the role that technology has played in that area.

Hosted by TSG’s Nathan Wright and James Baker, the first two podcasts were based on World Post Day and World Statistics Day, with next month’s sessions due for release on World Diabetes Day (14 November) and World Television Day (21 November).

Triggered by the lack of technology-related podcasts currently available, Mr Baker said that the initiative was designed to raise awareness of technology in a fun and engaging manner.

‘The few technology-focused podcasts currently online are very American and very much advertising-led. I thought it would be fun to develop our own series, which gives back to the community and promotes technology in the Island,’ he explained. ‘The podcasts are also designed to inspire young people to consider a career in technology. To do that, it was important to demystify tech so the aim of each podcast is to steer away from focusing on products and services, and instead to create a fun and friendly environment where people could consume information in a non-technical manner. Supporting this, we will also invite guests with expertise in certain areas to join us for particular podcasts.’

While delivered in a relaxed style, each podcast will also – as the name suggests – include some tips to help people save time.

‘Time-saving is very much at the core of what we do,’ Mr Baker added. ‘As a company, our goal is to help businesses to become more efficient and productive by redesigning processes and developing apps to simplify and automate the administrative side so that firms have more time to focus on their client-based activities. Time is the most valuable thing we have so the more time we can regain, the more competitive we will be.’

And while fun is integral to each podcast, there will be some serious messages within the gurus’ next recording.

‘While I don’t want to give away too much before recording, World Diabetes Day has particular significance for one of us. During the conversation, we will be looking at the history of diabetes, other notable events that have occurred on 14 November over the years and also how medical technology has developed. For example, there are now systems that will notify your partner if your blood sugar level is falling or if you have collapsed or are moving differently from normal,’ said Mr Baker.

‘On a lighter note, when it comes to World Television Day, we will look at how entertainment has changed from the days of radio to black-and-white television to on-demand streaming services. We will also look at how Covid-19 has shaped people’s viewing habits and talk about how we see this changing and developing.’
