Nature Watch: June (Coastlands and cliffs)

To encourage you to go out and make the most of the Island’s natural assets, the JEP is running Nature Watch, a monthly photographic competition and online picture gallery.

Each month we will print your best nature pictures and also share them here on our website. And one winning photographer will receive a printed canvas of their image, courtesy of Framing Workshop.

Use the form below to upload your best pictures.

This month’s theme: Coastlands and cliffs

Nature expert Mike Stentiford has this advice:

THE theme for June, and the challenge for photographers, offers quite a few opportunities to become acquainted with an interesting diversity of wildlife.

In addition to its natural beauty, Jersey’s coastline and sea cliffs are especially full of botanic colour throughout this glorious month of early summer.

From the south-facing coastline of Noirmont, Beauport, Portelet and Corbiere to the rugged steep cliffs of the north coast, nature is at its most colourful best.

The profusion of flowering plants such as ox-eye daisies and foxgloves should make for some stunning images while birds such as gulls and fulmars will be actively attending their newborn chicks.

One of the most prolific of coastal flowering plants is gorse which can provide ideal habitat for some very special birds such as Dartford warbler, linnet and whitethroat.

All are active throughout June although a degree of luck and patience will no doubt be required.

Our coastline can also be attractive to butterflies and other insects thus offering further possibilities for the enthusiastic wildlife photographer.

As always – good clicking!
