Football: Wembley winner to face new-look Jersey

While on loan at League Two Luton Town six years ago, Spillane and his Hatters team-mates beat League One Scunthorpe United 3-2 to win the Football League’s Johnson Paint Trophy.

A League One winner with Norwich City – and their youngest player to feature in an FA Cup tie – the defender/midfielder is now plying his trade with Sutton, who are visiting the Island tomorrow for a pre-season friendly against a JFA XI.

Sutton United are expected to field their first XI, including Spillane who was born in Jersey after his mother, who was on holiday, was hospitalised here for eight weeks during the final stages of her pregnancy.

Spillane, who has the name Helier as one of his Christian names, played U17, U18, U19 and U21 football for the Republic of Ireland, captaining both the U17s and U18s, the latter to a tournament success in Portugal.

The five-time Isthmian Premier League winners play their fourth game in eight days. On Tuesday evening they were beaten 2-0 by a young Crystal Palace side in a game that marked the official opening of Sutton’s new 3G surface.

Jersey manager Jimmy Reilly has been forced to make a dozen changes to his NatWest Island Games squad due to holidays and injury.

The Scot has included several of the Island’s under-21 players together with several who have not featured at senior Island level previously.

Kick-off is at 3 pm, admission is £4 and a match-day programme will be on sale at £1 a copy.

The Jersey squad is: Jonny Willows, José Figueira, Kamen Nafkha, Nathan Strzelecki, Luke Campbell, Calvin Weir, Elliot Poole, Jake Baker, Craig Russell, Jack Griffin, Dominic Pougeolle, Zeljko Martinovic, Kieran Lester, Karl Hinds, Rupert Murray and Jason De Andrade.
