Football: England beaten on penalties – by Jersey

The England on show did not include Harry Kane or Dele Alli, instead the country’s top non-League stars, but Tuesday’s victory – albeit on penalties – is a result that will breed confidence as Jersey approach a weekend in Ireland and an Island Games campaign in Gotland.

James Quérée’s late equaliser ended a barren spell in front of goal for the hosts as they approached four games against UK opposition without scoring. It followed Fejiri Okenabirhie’s second-half opener for the FA XI and goalkeeper Euan Van Der Vliet then saved two spot-kicks to leave the home support smiling.

‘It’s a relief for the players, and I’m so pleased for them,’ said Island boss Martin Cassidy. ‘We have under-performed in the last two games but we got an outstanding team effort from 16 of the squad.’
