JERSEY’S footballers lost their grip on the Muratti Vase at Foote’s Lane with Guernsey emerging 2-1 winners, despite immense second-half pressure from the visitors.
The hosts quickly swept into the lead in the Hepburns-sponsored match, with Dom Heaume first to react when Jersey goalkeeper Euan Van der Vliet parried out a shot.
Guernsey’s ace striker Ross Allen made it 2-0, although Jersey had already shown they, too, had the ability to create scoring chances. Indeed, Ben Gallichan was twice denied only by the frame of the Guernsey goal.
Jersey’s threat grew in the second half as Guernsey strangely withdrew to protect their lead. But chance after chance went begging until replacement Hinds’ shot managed to cross the Guernsey line. A desperate finish could easily have forced extra time, but an equaliser did not come, despite the best efforts of Martin Cassidy’s men, who registered 20 shots to Guernsey’s six and nine corners to just two from their hosts.
