Football: Jersey v Uefa court date confirmed

Officials in Switzerland have summoned both parties following the European governing body’s decision to throw out Jersey’s bid for international football.

Uefa’s executive committee rejected the application from Springfield last year on the grounds that Jersey is not recognised as an ‘independent state’ by the United Nations. However, the rejection came without the matter being passed to the 55 existing Uefa nations, and the JFA want their case to go to a vote.

‘The key element of our argument is that the executive should have sent our application to congress,’ said JFA president Phil Austin.

Confirmation of the court date, which coincides with the 2017 NatWest Island Games in Gotland, comes five months after the appeal was lodged. It follows a number of failed attempts to get both parties around the same table.
