Football: Uefa Statutes ‘ambiguous’

Article 5 of the Statutes – a stumbling block for Jersey – says that all Uefa members must be recognised by the United Nations, but the UN do not formally recognise countries.

The CAS decision to uphold Kosovo’s Uefa membership was based on the fact that ‘the majority’ of the 193 UN states recognise the region as independent.

‘We’ll have to argue our case accordingly,’ said JFA president Phil Austin. ‘In the eyes of the world I don’t think we’ll be recognised in the same way as Kosovo, but that’s not to say we don’t have a legitimate argument.’
