Rugby: Robling injury adds to Reds’ worries

Jersey Reds had one such day on Saturday, defeated late in the game thanks to a late 14-point surge from their hosts. And they suffered another serious injury blow: Lewis Robling was hospitalised after a nasty collision and could not fly back to the Island with his team-mates.

With the prospect of league leaders London Irish as their next game, losing another key player was just what the Reds didn’t need.

‘It was a bad injury and we hope we’ll get good news from the hospital about Lewis once we’re back in Jersey,’ said head coach Harvey Biljon. ‘He received excellent treatment from our medical team straight away, and if there’s any comfort our players can take from this situation it’s the professional care that’s available.’

Initially suffering double vision but said to be otherwise in reasonable shape after a collision with Rotherham Titans’ Ben Foley, Robling remained in hospital yesterday afternoon.

On the 23-16 defeat, Biljon added: ‘We were probably not as game-smart as we should have been. They recognised we had scrum-halves on the wing and at full-back, and they exploited that.’
