Raymond: Reduced sports travel grant better than nothing

Earlier this month, assistant minister at Economic Development Steve Pallett, who has responsibility for sport, warned clubs and associations to expect considerably less public funding for sports travel from the beginning of next year.

After an uneasy wait for the Island’s sporting community, EDD have announced that ‘extra’ funding has been found from within the department’s budget, meaning the Advisory Council – the body responsible for allocating travel grants – would be given £125,000 to distribute.

The figure is half of that granted for 2016, and almost a third of what was set aside for both 2014 and 2015, but Jersey Sports Council chairman Raymond, who also sits on the Advisory Council, says he is ‘happy sports have received something’.
